THE NEED
WE REMOVE THE ORGAN AND DEMAND THE FUNCTION

"And all the time—such is the tragi-comedy of our situation—we continue to clamour for those very qualities we are rendering impossible.... In a sort of ghastly simplicity we remove the organ and demand the function. We make men without chests and expect of them virtue and enterprise. We laugh at honour and are shocked to find traitors in our midst. We castrate and bid the geldings be fruitful.”

~C.S. Lewis, The Abolition of Man

In a culture that says truth is relative and denies that there are absolute realities that we must live within, education can become anchor-less and ungrounded. Classical Christian education upholds the belief that absolute truth exists - foremost in the person of Jesus Christ (John 14:6) and the Bible (John 17:17).

Classical Education

The Oaks Academy utilizes a classical philosophy of education. At the heart of classical education is the Trivium. The Trivium, the three arts of language, can be understood as both tools of learning as well as phases of learning.

Grammar is the tool and phase in which a student of any subject learns the fundamental rules and core knowledge of each subject. In this phase of learning at The Oaks (Kindergarten through 6th grade), students are memorizing key facts, terms, and basic skills of a subject.

Logic, also known as Dialectic, is the tool and phase in which a student learns the ordered and logical connection of particulars within each subject. It is during this time, 7th-9th grades, that students are already asking the questions of “Why?” and “How?”. They are ready to grow in understanding how the facts they learned during the Grammar stage fit together.

The final stage, Rhetoric, is when the student (9th-12th grades) learns the proper use and clear communication of the knowledge and understanding they have gained. Developmentally children of this age are already trying out opinions and forging convictions. This tool of learning equips the student to express conclusions eloquently, properly, and creatively.

These tools of learning can be applied throughout one’s lifetime to any subject, from mathematics to baking or woodworking. Thus, the student has gained the tools necessary for how to think well and are thus prepared to be a lifelong learner.

The Trivium is a time-tested and proven framework to learning that is tailored to students’ cognitive development and corresponds with the biblical progression from knowledge to understanding to wisdom.

RESEARCH

The Good Soil Study

Research conducted by the Association of Classical Christian Schools (ACCS) and the University of Notre Dame, entitled The Good Soil Study, support CCE as the ideal educational approach to prepare students academically, but also to prepare them for a satisfying, God-honoring life.

This study compared 24-42 year old alumni from public, secular private/prep schools, Catholic schools, evangelical Christian schools, religious homeschools, and ACCS (classical Christian) schools.

Alumni from Classical Christian Schools...

Perform better on the SAT Exam

ACCS students score 187 points above the benchmark compared to public school students falling 20 below the benchmark.

Are more grateful and satisfied.

Nearly 80% of ACCS alumni reported having much to be grateful for.

Talk about God regularly with their families.

Compared to the other alumni, ACCS alumni were most likely to discuss God

and faith with their families on a regular basis.
